During this workshop you will be fully guided and taught life drawing in both traditional and contemporary practice:

The workshop will begin with an introduction including a demonstration

  • You shall explore fast gestural drawings in charcoal on A1 paper

  • There will be an emphasis on relaxing the mind and body to allow this process to flow, important to be alert to the visual information

  • There will be regular breaks for reflection and to assess progress and respond appropriately

  • Following gesture there will be a more analytical look at a pose including a demonstration to observe body structure

  • You shall be taught or develop your skills of measuring and some rhythmical analysis

  • You will learn how to divide up and understand the figure into understandable proportions using sight measuring and plumb lines

  • There will be a variety of poses that the model will perform to give you a full range of body articulations to draw from

  • This whole mornings process will give you the tools to be able to quickly assess and make a solid quick sketch that you will take forward into the afternoons long pose

  • The afternoon pose will be approx 2 hours with regular breaks for both artist and model

Therefore on this workshop you will learn:

    1. how to measure and plan a figure on A1 paper through traditional techniques.

    2. how to be at ease with this process including

    1. being relaxed with the model

    2. understanding the equipment

    3. a host of techniques that will enable you to approach life drawing from differing and exciting viewpoints, from gestural to geometric, including envelopes, shapes, weight, tension, geometric forms and volume and marrying the analytical and the poetic
