COMPOSITION WORKSHOP

DURING THIS WORKSHOP WE SHALL EXPLORE WHAT COMPOSITION ACTUALLY MEANS IN RELATION TO PAINTING AND DRAWING. WHY IS ONE ARRANGEMENT OF OBJECTS IN A PAINTING “PLEASING" AND ANOTHER "WRONG"?WITH DIFFERENT CRITERIA IN DIFFERENT CULTURES AND HISTORICAL PERIODS THIS WORKSHOP WILL AIM TO GIVE YOU AN INSIGHT INTO SEVERAL CONTRASTING ARTISTS' COMPOSITIONAL METHODS, RANGING FROM THE RIGOROUS UNDERLYING GEOMETRY OF THE RENAISSANCE TO THE URGENT  "PRIMITIVISTIC" ANTI COMPOSITION OF THE GERMAN EXPRESSIONISTS. WE SHALL EXPLORE WHAT WAS MONDRIAN DOING COMPOSITION-WISE AND BONNARD AND DEGAS INFLUENCE OF THE CHANCE CROPPING OF SNAPSHOT PHOTOGRAPHY. YOU WILL ALSO EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR OWN COMPOSITIONAL VARIATIONS. THIS IS THEREFORE A PRIMARILY PRACTICAL WORKSHOP WITH PLENTY OF ART HISTORICAL INSPIRATIONAL INPUT WHICH CAN REALLY HELP YOU WITH YOUR OWN WORK.

TUTOR TIM MORRISON TRAINED AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART AND EDINBURGH, HAS EXHIBITED IN YORK AND LONDON AND HAS MANY YEARS EXPERIENCE TEACHING SUCCESSFUL, VARIED AND INTERESTING AND ADULT ART CLASSES. TIM IS REGULARLY PART OF YORK OPEN STUDIOS.
