Tutor: Andrian Melka
Thursday 7th & Friday 8th November 2019 • 10:00 am - 4:30pm • £195.00
Suitable for all levels • All materials, tools, refreshments and a light lunch of soup and sandwiches included and provided
During this course you will learn how to model a full size clay portrait from an armature to a finished head, working from a life model in the studio:
Andrian will demonstrate the whole process, working alongside you to teach different ways of building up your portrait, capturing the character of the model, and teaching techniques for adding the finishing touches.
You will build up your clay head working with water based clay to create the shape of the head of your life size portrait sculpture, with the aim being to create a likeness of the model, whilst keeping a fresh feel on the clay modelling process.
You will be taught how to take some basic measurements but will be working largely from observation and intuition, creating your individual personal response to the model.
At the end of the course you will have the option to take your sculpture to be fired at a recommended pottery studio in York for the cost of around £20. If you prefer to arrange to have your sculpture cast into plaster or bronze we can advise you on how to prepare for this and Andrian can put you in touch with a local foundry and advise on how much this will be likely to cost.
Andrian Melka began studying Art and Sculpture at the age of ten, graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana in 1994. After graduation, he spent two years copying antique heads and reliefs in a marble workshop in Albania. He moved to England in 1997 with a Getty scholarship and spent a year at the Building Crafts College in London where he was awarded the City & Guilds Silver Medal for Excellence and granted the Freedom of Carpenters' Company and the Freedom of the City of London.
He then moved to York to work as Head Sculptor with the renowned carver Dick Reid, alongside several great designers and architects on many high profile commissions including the Jubilee Fountain on Sandringham Estate erected to commemorate The Queens Golden Jubilee and figures of Christ and Madonna for St Mungos Church in Glasgow.
Andrian opened his own studio near York in 2003 taking on a wide range of commissions in the UK and America. His clients have included: Lord Rothschild, HRH The Prince of Wales, Lord Conrad Black, Lord Halifax and Fred Landman. Since his early days studying figurative sculpture at high school, Andrian has continually strived to explore the timeless fascination which the human form holds. Over the years he has utilised many different mediums and styles but since moving to the UK his work has focused on marble, stone and bronze. He relishes the distinct challenges of both making realistic figures, as well as abstractions based on the human form.
