During this workshop you will investigate and learn how to create a traditional painting using skills and techniques rarely taught:

  • Learning how to prepare a panel

  • Lay down ground

  • Develop a drawing from a still life using charcoal considering composition

  • Work monochromatically to prepare a grisaille

  • Explore glazing medium and acrylic paints to build up luminous layers of tone and hue using a limited palette


Patrick Smith BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting / Printmaking P.C.E.T – P.G.C.E A is an established artist in fine art and printmaking having work in many private collections both nationally and internationally. His practice concentrates on ideas associated with the edge and devices in composition and form. Patrick studied painting and printmaking at Leeds Metropolitan University where he was awarded the William Tier memorial award for Landscapes and Erasmus scholarship to train at the Utrecht School of the Arts in Holland. He has taught for many years to degree level and runs various courses and workshops:

Terms and conditions: A 50% deposit is required to book a place on any course or workshop with the balance due the week before the start date. In the unlikely event we have to can cel a course or workshop you deposit will be returned to you in full. Should you have to cancel a your place on a workshop or course, your deposit will be returned to you or transferred to another course if your cancellation is 7 days or more before the commencement of the courses or workshop. If less than 7 days notice is given the deposit is non refundable unless we can fill your place in which case it shall be returned to you.
